If we ask in perplexity, why do so many men and women seem incapable of generous impulse, of reasoned patriotism, of seeing beyond the circle of their own interests, is not the answer, that men are enabled for such things by education?

Ambleside School of Ashland opened the doors to 54 students in grades K-8 along with their enthusiastic, faithful pioneering parents in August of 2022. What inspired us then continues to motivate us now as we have grown to be a K-12 school; that the children of the bay area would have a place to learn and grow where they are seen as image bearers of God, created with immeasurable value and potential, and empowered to author lives that are full and free — rich in relationship to God, self, others, ideas, work and creation.
Some examples of this in principle are:
.
- All truth is true because it is God’s truth and should not be separated into categories like secular and sacred. For example, the beauty of mathematics reflects something of God’s order, represents the language spoken by God to bring the world into existence and is worthy of study for its own sake. It does not need a picture of Noah, or a verse applied to make it “Christian.” Truth is beautiful because God is beautiful, and it is his reflection on display for us to see regardless of to whom it has been revealed.
. - Joy comes when we find ourselves in a mind-to-mind meeting with God. Because all that is good, true and beautiful comes from God and reflects his glory, we can find joy in him when we delight in these things. This happens in the reading of a worthy book, listening to music, serving those around us or responding to God with songs of praise.
. - Children are persons, created in God’s image, with a capacity and desire to learn. We crush that desire when we bore them with endless worksheets and dry textbooks full of pre-digested knowledge. We give them “sawdust” to satisfy hungry minds and wonder why we have to promise stickers and candy to make them “eat.” Instead, at Ambleside, a rich challenging feast of interesting material is set for the children, and they come and “eat” and are nourished and grow to want more.
. - When Jesus came and died and paid the penalty for our sins, he took us out of the hopeless grind of comparison and shame, of tallying my “points” against the law, etc. Instead, He loves us, gently convicts us, and teaches us through his Word, other believers and by his Spirit. At Ambleside, we recognize the “point” system, of stickers and comparison and shame and fear, which works well in the short term to motivate desired behavior, fails to build the internal will to do what is right once these exterior motivators are removed. Ambleside teachers forfeit that approach and instead treat children as persons and work diligently and gently to help instill habits that form their will to do what is right.
.
We encourage you to read through the pages of this website to better understand an Ambleside education. It is beautiful to see students in Wisconsin thrive as they learn in a way that fits their design. We invite you to consider joining with this community of learners.
